In November 2014 Mars lights up the early evening hours; Jupiter is out from midnight till dawn; and Mercury is found low in the east as darkness gives way to dawn. This month, Saturn and Venus are lost in the sun’s glare.
So if you are a night owl, midnight is the time to go out, look east, and find the brightest star like object in the sky. I was out early this morning around 20 minutes after midnight, and found Jupiter easily. Also bright in the sky is Sirius, the dog star. Other stars to watch for earlier in the evening are Rigel and Capella, which I identified by using my SkyScout.
I have discovered the field across the road, currently lying fallow, is relatively free from light pollution, and gives a reasonably wide view of the night sky unhindered by too many houses.
